The Olympic Club has officially pulled out of the Westlake Park deal. On Friday the city posted a notice on its website: "The City is in receipt of a notification from The Olympic Club respectfully withdrawing from the MOU for the Proposed Westlake Park Field Improvements Project." Thank you to everyone who made this happen. Rich Swan, Emily Stoops and Tatum King, who were the first to stand up against it at a council meeting back on July 27. Everyone who packed the Merced Room on July 29, and the fifty or so of you who showed up to the canceled town hall on August 13 and stood in a circle in the fog anyway. Vice Mayor Teresa Proaño, Pamela DiGiovanni and Juslyn Manalo, who came out that night and said where they stood. And everyone who put a sign in a window, wrote to the clerk or handed a flyer to a neighbor. This shows that together the community can make a difference.
City Meeting Updates
The pool hall passed, with later hours
Last Tuesday the Planning Commission voted to recommend the billiards hall at 6232 Mission Street, the old Dollar Tree, to the City Council. Everyone who spoke was for it. Mission Street needed places to go in the evening. (Meeting page)
The best argument of the night came from Rose Khanouf, who has lived here forty years and raised four sons. "We really don't have any recreational things for young adults," she told the commission, and the ones there are mean driving out of town. On the 8 p.m. cutoff for minors: "by the time they come home, homework, sports, it's already eight." Teenagers told the city the same thing during the outreach for its 2020 parks master plan: they had no place to hang out "where they have 'permission' to linger." Two brokers for the landlord, both Westlake residents, spoke in favor as well. Henry Khanouf also mentioned they've been talking with the city about opening the lot for parking during a festival on October 17.
Staff set the conditions after meeting with the Police Department and the City Attorney's office: closing at midnight, minors out by 8 p.m. on weeknights, door security from 6 p.m., cameras coordinated with the police. The family asked for minors until 10 p.m. every night and a 1 a.m. close on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Staff offered a middle path, where the commission could send the compromise back to the police and the city attorney before it reaches the council. The commission didn't take it. The motion that passed moved minors to 10 p.m. and closing to 1 a.m. with no day limit at all, which is more than the family asked for. Staff report
Daly City Tech Support
On a continuing pattern of city tech issues: A couple of weeks ago I said I couldn't find approved minutes for any Personnel Board meeting this year and needed to figure out why. Part of the answer is that the video the city posted of the board's August 13 meeting has no audio on it. I skimmed through the video and while the visuals are there, the audio isn't. Which means I can't rely on transcribing the video.
Six city meetings this year have a posted video with nothing on the audio: the Small Business Commission on March 12, May 14 and June 11, the Women's Commission on March 26 and June 25, and now the Personnel Board. Until the minutes post, the video is the only record. This one is blank. The Personnel Board still has no minutes posted for 2026, and its agenda for Thursday opens with approving the August 13 minutes.
Tonight at the Arts and Culture Commission
The Arts and Culture Commission meets tonight (Tuesday, September 8) at 6:30 in the third-floor conference room at City Hall, and the whole agenda is things to look forward to: a Día de los Muertos celebration running October through December, pop-up art shows, a future exhibit with the Chinese Arts Association of San Francisco, an "I LOVE DALY CITY" picture spot and a fresh round of painted electrical boxes this fall. The Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee met Wednesday on its six street projects and the letter-writing subcommittee idea. No minutes or recording yet.

Wednesday, September 30, 6 to 8 p.m. League of Women Voters candidate forum for the City Council race, in the Council Chambers at 333 90th Street. Free. It is the last scheduled forum before early voting starts, and the League runs it rather than the city. Details
Monday, October 5. Early voting begins in San Mateo County. Voter registration closes October 19; after that you can still register and vote conditionally at a county voting site.

Other Alerts
The Westlake slurry seal is still working street by street into January. Same rules as before: closed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on your street's day, anything still parked after 7 a.m. gets towed at your expense, signs go up 48 hours ahead. The schedule is on the construction projects page.
A neighbor going through a bathroom remodel gave a shout out to the city's building inspectors on r/DalyCity. The inspector caught the contractor putting drywall behind the shower waterproofing where code doesn't allow it, and the contractor had to tear it out and redo it. Nice to see them get a thank-you for once.
